TTTC's E. J. McCluskey Best Doctoral Thesis 2011 Award Contest
About the contest

Test Technology Technical Council (TTTC)'s E. J. McCluskey Best Doctoral Thesis 2011 Award contest will be held as a part of the 2011 IEEE VLSI Test Symposium (VTS'11). This will be one of three semi-finals, the other two being held at the IEEE Asian Test Symposium (ATS'10) and at the IEEE European Test Symposium (ETS'11). The final competition will be held between the winners of the three semi-finals, at the IEEE International Test Conference (ITC'11). The contest provides graduate students with an opportunity to disseminate their research, obtain visibility in the international test community, and win recognition for their achievements. The VTS TTTC Student Activities Committee is organizing the semi-finals at VTS.

Eligibility criteria

Students enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program who have graduated in 2010 or expect to graduate within the next year are eligible for participating in this contest. Students are encouraged to apply when they are close to completion of their doctoral work. A student who has won the competition once cannot participate again. Students can participate up to three times in this competition. Submissions can be made only to one regional site, among North American, European and Asian regions. Students whose research area is in the scope of topics outlined in the VTS call for papers are eligible to apply.

Submission instructions

The following submission instructions hold for all three semi-finals.
To enter the competition, students should submit the following material in their application:
  • A 1-page abstract of the doctoral thesis including the student's name and affiliation, the title of the thesis, and the expected date of graduation. A second page may be used for references and/or figures only.
  • A letter of support from the Ph.D. thesis advisor endorsing the student's participation
  • A 1-page CV of the student applicant
The abstract should clearly (i) define the problem and its relevance to industry, (ii) describe the current state-of-the-art for solving the problem, and (iii) explain the proposed methodology (and any pertinent case study) and how it advances the theory and/or practice in the field.
Competition details

A list of semi-finalists will be selected from the submitted applications by a jury of prominent academic and industry researchers in the principal areas in the scope of VTS.
The competition will proceed in two phases. In the first phase, a jury will judge the 1-page abstracts of the contestants and assign scores. In the second phase, the contestants will present their work in front of the judges at the semi-final event. The assessment and decision on finalists will be taken by considering cumulative scores from both phases.
The winners of the three regional semi-finals will present their thesis work in a 30-minute presentation at ITC 2011 and the final winner will be determined by a panel of industrial experts. The winning student and the thesis advisor will be presented with an award and an invitation to submit a paper to the prestigious IEEE Design & Test of Computers.
